Additional information

Brazil's shift to aluminium bronze for this issue was a direct consequence of wartime metal shortages. The country had entered the Allied side in 1942 after German submarines sank several Brazilian merchant vessels, and the resulting mobilization placed pressure on copper and zinc reserves previously used for coinage.

The series ran through 1947, well past the armistice, reflecting how slowly peacetime metal supply chains normalized in South America.
