Brazil's wartime metal shortages forced the Casa da Moeda to abandon the aluminum-bronze alloy used in earlier 50 centavos pieces, switching to copper-nickel for this brief two-year run before nickel itself became too strategically constrained. By 1943 the mint had pivoted again, this time to stainless steel, making this copper-nickel type an isolated transitional issue sitting between two very different metallurgical moments in Brazilian monetary history.
The 1942 date is considerably more common. 1943 survivors in better condition are undervalued relative to their actual scarcity.
