Comments

The Banco Nacional de la República Argentina was itself a short-lived institution, created in 1872 and absorbed into the new Banco de la Nación Argentina in 1891 — meaning this entire note series had less than two decades of relevance before the issuing authority ceased to exist. The 1884 dating places it squarely in the period of aggressive Argentine monetary expansion that preceded the catastrophic Baring Crisis of 1890, when overleveraged foreign debt and unchecked paper issuance nearly collapsed the national economy.

B. Lange printing in Buenos Aires rather than abroad was relatively unusual for the period, when most South American governments still relied on European security printers.
