Chile's 1862 monetary reform pushed out the old real-based system in favor of decimal pesos, and this 50 centavos piece was among the first coins struck under that new framework. The Casa de Moneda in Santiago had only recently been modernized with steam-powered presses acquired in the 1850s, and early decimal strikes from this period occasionally show inconsistent collar pressure as the facility worked through the adjustment.
The KM#134 type spans just five years before being superseded by a lighter standard in 1867.
