Additional information

The 2009 Vatican 50 cent belongs to the series issued under Benedict XVI following the 2002 euro adoption, minted at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome. Vatican euro coins are produced in strictly limited quantities for collectors rather than general circulation — the city-state has no retail economy requiring coinage — which means virtually every surviving example has never passed through a single transaction.

Annual Vatican sets are released in sealed packaging and sell out rapidly through the philatelic and numismatic office, keeping genuine circulated examples essentially nonexistent.
