Obverse description Four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading top to bottom and right to left in regular script (kaishu). The characters 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao) are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field. The legend denotes the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor and the designation 'heavy currency,' consistent with the higher-denomination cash coinage of the period.
