Additional information

Venezuela's 1990 silver 50 Bolívares was issued as the country's oil revenues were declining sharply from their 1970s peak, and the bolívar was already under sustained devaluation pressure that would eventually collapse the currency entirely over the following decades. The Banco Central's decision to strike a high-weight silver piece at this moment was partly institutional self-promotion — the coin commemorates the bank's own founding anniversary.

Collector demand for this issue has always been modest outside Venezuela.
