The Putna Monastery church coin was issued as part of Romania's long-running commemorative circulation series honoring Orthodox Christian heritage sites. Putna itself was founded by Stephen the Great in 1466 following his victory over the Ottomans at the Battle of Vaslui — or more precisely, vowed before it — and became his burial place upon his death in 1504. Stephen was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992, which renewed institutional interest in the monastery as a national pilgrimage site.
