Queen Sirikit was born on August 12, 1932, a date the Thai government has long designated as Mother's Day nationwide. Her 84th birthday in 2016 carried particular dynastic weight — King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, was in severely declining health and would die that October, making this one of the final commemorative issues authorized under his reign.
