KM#22 was issued as part of Macau's first gold coinage program, authorized under Portuguese administration just years before the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 reshaped expectations for the entire region's political future. Portugal had governed Macau since the sixteenth century, but by the early 1980s the territory's long-term status was already a quiet diplomatic preoccupation.
Mintages for this type were low by design — these were not circulation pieces but prestige issues aimed at collectors and the regional gold market. The .917 fineness follows the traditional crown gold standard rather than the fine gold benchmark more common in modern bullion coinage.
