Iceland's 50 aurar had a troubled final decade. Chronic inflation through the 1970s and early 1980s eroded the aurar's purchasing power so badly that the denomination was effectively worthless in daily commerce well before it was officially demonetized. The 1981 date falls near the end of production for this type, with the Central Bank winding down aurar coinage as Iceland prepared the currency reforms that would eventually replace the króna entirely in 1981 at a ratio of 100 old krónur to one new króna.
