Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, this coin appeared while Afghanistan was in the grip of civil war following the Soviet withdrawal and the collapse of the Najibullah government. The internationally recognized state issuing UN commemoratives in 1995 was, in practice, a government with almost no territorial control — Kabul itself was being shelled by rival mujahideen factions that year.
