Obverse description Against a mirror-polished field, the obverse features the state emblem of Kazakhstan rendered in high relief at upper left, depicting a shanyrak (the crown of a yurt) surrounded by rays and mythological horses. To the right, the denomination '50000 ТЕҢГЕ' is inscribed in two lines, accompanied by the fineness and weight notation 'Au 999 1000gr.' in smaller lettering below. In the lower portion of the field, a relief map of Kazakhstan is depicted, overlaid at right with a decorative motif in the form of an ancient Scythian golden ornament with spiraling designs. The Kazakhstan Mint privy mark (KMC) appears in the lower left of the field. The circular legend 'ҚАЗАҚСТАН ҰЛТТЫҚ БАНКІ' (National Bank of Kazakhstan) runs along the upper rim in Kazakh Cyrillic script.

Additional information

Kazakhstan declared independence on December 16, 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union — one of the last republics to formally do so. This piece was issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of that declaration. At one kilogram of .999 gold and 100mm across, it belongs to a class of central bank prestige issues produced explicitly for reserve and institutional buyers rather than any secondary market.

KM#216 is among the largest denomination coins ever issued by the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
