| Additional information |
Alfonso Ugarte was the Peruvian military officer who, according to national legend, wrapped himself in the Peruvian flag and rode his horse off a cliff at Arica rather than surrender to Chilean forces during the War of the Pacific in 1880. The battle was a catastrophic defeat; Arica fell, and Peru lost its southernmost territory. Ugarte became a martyr figure almost immediately.
This gold issue was part of a broader commemorative program authorized in the late 1970s under the military government of Francisco Morales Bermúdez, drawing on the centennial of that war.
