Tanzania's 50th anniversary of independence from British rule fell in 2011, marking the half-century since Tanganyika achieved self-governance in December 1961 — Julius Nyerere's TANU party having won the pre-independence elections with near-total legislative dominance. The commemorative silver program issued that year was modest in scope, with KM#73 among a small group of pieces authorized specifically for the jubilee.
Nyerere declined a presidential salary for much of his tenure and famously earned the Swahili honorific *Mwalimu* — "teacher" — before holding any office.
