Indonesia's first polymer banknote, this 50,000 Rupiah was issued to commemorate twenty-five years of Soeharto's Pembangunan program — the state-directed development ideology that restructured the Indonesian economy from the late 1960s onward. The choice of polymer substrate was deliberate: Australia's Note Printing Australia had been aggressively marketing Guardian polymer technology across Southeast Asia, and Indonesia's adoption of it here was as much a prestige signal as a counterfeiting deterrent.

The note became politically awkward well before it left circulation. Soeharto resigned in May 1998, mid-series, leaving a commemorative note honoring a deposed president in active use. Bank Indonesia withdrew it with quiet efficiency.
