The Federation of Socialist Soviet Republics of Transcaucasia was a short-lived political union of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, formalized in 1922 and absorbed into the USSR the following year. Its independent currency emissions were correspondingly brief — this 1923 issue appeared during a period of catastrophic hyperinflation that was rendering rouble-denominated notes obsolete almost as fast as they could be printed, which explains why denominations climbed so rapidly into the tens of thousands.
The Transcaucasian Federation's notes are frequently confused with RSFSR emissions from the same period. P#S616 is a regional issue, distinct in authority if not always in appearance to the untrained eye.
