Belarus redenominated in 2000, lopping four zeroes off the Soviet-era rouble, which reset the currency but did nothing to arrest the inflation that followed. The 50,000 rouble denomination was introduced into this post-redenomination series as purchasing power continued to erode through the 2000s — a note that entered circulation as a meaningful sum and exited it as bus fare.
