The 50,000 Rial note commemorates the University of Tehran, founded in 1934 as the first modern state university in Iran — a deliberate act of secular nation-building under Reza Shah that the Islamic Republic has since reframed within its own ideological priorities. The Bank Markazi continued issuing high-denomination rials in this period largely in response to chronic inflation; by the mid-2010s, 50,000 rials was worth well under two US dollars at official rates.
P#155 belongs to a series where the printed date field records the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar date, which external catalogs sometimes misrender or omit entirely — the "2015" designation is a Gregorian approximation.
