Bolivia's inflation in the early 1980s was among the worst recorded in the Western Hemisphere — by 1985, the annual rate had exceeded 11,000 percent. This 50,000 Pesos Bolivianos note was part of the emergency high-denomination releases that preceded the complete monetary collapse and the government's eventual introduction of the Boliviano in 1987, at a conversion rate of one million to one.
Jeffries Banknote Company of Los Angeles handled the printing — a smaller commercial security printer occasionally contracted by Latin American central banks when European houses were unavailable or too slow to respond to an urgent reorder.
