Süchteln is a small textile town in the lower Rhine region, and the Süchtelner Bank — a cooperative credit institution organized under mutual unlimited liability — was one of hundreds of local German banks pressed into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation of 1923. The 50,000 Mark denomination places this note in the middle phase of that collapse, before denominations climbed into the billions and trillions by autumn of that year.
The watermarked paper is notable for a note of this type — many Notgeld issues at this scale used whatever stock was available, and the presence of a security substrate suggests either advance planning or access to a printer with better-than-average materials on hand.
