Kreisausschuss des Kreises Schleswig issued this note during the hyperinflation emergency of 1923, when municipal and district authorities across Germany were legally permitted — and practically compelled — to issue their own Notgeld to fill the void left by the Reichsbank's inability to keep pace with denominations spiraling upward weekly. At 50,000 Mark, this note represents the middle range of Schleswig district emissions; by August 1923 the same Kreisausschuss was issuing notes in the millions.
L. Handorff in Kiel handled both design and printing, a common consolidation for smaller regional contracts where speed mattered more than prestige.
