Part of Italy's ongoing "Città d'Arte" bullion and commemorative program, this issue was authorized under legislation that allowed the Zecca to produce legal-tender gold pieces tied to specific cultural monuments — a revenue-generating exercise as much as a numismatic one. The Battistero di Parma, an octagonal Romanesque structure begun in 1196 by Benedetto Antelami, was among dozens of sites cycled through the series across the 1990s.
Mintages for individual issues in this program varied considerably, and collector demand was uneven — pieces tied to less internationally recognized monuments moved slowly on initial release.
