Additional information

This issue belongs to the annual gold proof series the Zecca began producing in the early 1980s, aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation — no 50,000 lire coin ever traded hands in a Roman bar. By 1993, Italy was lurching through the Tangentopoli corruption investigations that would dissolve the First Republic entirely, taking most of the political establishment with them. Mintages in this series were deliberately kept low to sustain collector premiums.

The .900 fineness follows the standard established for Italian commemorative gold under post-war republic coinage law.
