Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 and their subsequent welcome into the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Bayezid II, who reportedly said that Ferdinand of Spain had impoverished his own kingdom while enriching the Ottomans. The Turkish Jewish community, concentrated largely in Istanbul, Izmir, and Bursa, had maintained a distinct Ladino-speaking culture for precisely five centuries by the time this coin was struck.
Production was handled by the Turkish State Mint in Ankara as part of a broader commemorative program that year.
