Turgut Reis — the Ottoman admiral born around 1485 — spent decades raiding Venetian and Spanish shipping before Charles V's forces captured him in 1540 and chained him to a galley oar for four years. His liberation was negotiated by Hayreddin Barbarossa during the siege of Nice in 1543, after which he returned to active command and eventually became Governor of Algiers. He died at the siege of Malta in 1565.
This piece belongs to Turkey's 1985 gold commemorative program honoring historical Ottoman figures, struck in a year when the lira was depreciating sharply under chronic inflation — giving the gold content immediate practical relevance beyond the face value.
