| Additional information |
Turkey's 50,000 lira denomination emerged directly from one of the most prolonged inflation crises of the late 20th century — a decade-long spiral that rendered smaller denominations essentially worthless and forced the mint to continuously introduce higher face values just to keep pace with purchasing power losses. By 1996, annual inflation was running above 80 percent. These coins were obsolete in real terms almost the moment they were struck, which is why circulated examples tend to show heavy wear: they moved through commerce at extraordinary velocity before the 2005 redenomination collapsed six zeros off the currency.
