Japan and Laos established formal diplomatic relations in 1955, a decade after Japan's wartime occupation of French Indochina had left a complicated political inheritance across the region. The 60th anniversary commemoration in 2015 arrived as bilateral ties had deepened substantially through Japanese ODA infrastructure funding, which by that point made Japan one of Laos's largest single aid donors.
