Additional information

László V — known to history as László the Posthumous, born after his father Albert II's death — became King of Hungary at birth in 1440, setting off a fifteen-year regency struggle that nearly fractured the kingdom. His actual reign was brief and contested; he died in 1457 at seventeen, probably of leukemia, though contemporaries suspected poison. The piefort format, struck at roughly double the standard planchet thickness, has roots in French assay practice and was historically used to test die quality before full production runs — a fitting choice for a commemorative where die sharpness is the entire point.
