Obverse description At center, the coat of arms of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) is displayed in high relief, featuring an eagle with spread wings surmounted by a radiant sun, with an anchor below and a circular Armenian legend surrounding the emblem. Two olive branches flank the date 1998 at the top of the field. The denomination 50000 appears in the lower central field, while a curved Armenian inscription reading 'Fifty Thousand Armenian Drams' runs along the lower periphery. Additional information

Artsakh — also known as Nagorno-Karabakh — declared independence from Azerbaijan in 1991, though no UN member state ever formally recognized it. This coin was issued by its self-declared central bank at a moment when the territory was consolidating institutions of statehood, including a currency, largely as instruments of political assertion rather than economic function. The 50,000 drams denomination existed on paper; circulation was never the point.

The "We Are Our Mountains" monument in Stepanakert, erected in 1967 by sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan, became the defining symbol of Armenian identity in the region long before the conflict began.
