Kreisamt Bingen was one of hundreds of German municipal and district authorities that printed their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark's collapse made centrally issued notes obsolete almost as soon as they were printed. The fifty-million denomination places this firmly in the late summer or early autumn of that year — by November, similar authorities were printing in the billions and trillions. Local printer Juvenz Penzer handled the job in Bingen am Rhein, a small press doing work that the Reichsdruckerei simply could not keep pace with.
