Obverse description Salmon-toned Notgeld voucher executed in blue-grey letterpress, enclosed within a dense guilloche border frame. The denomination "Fünfzig Millionen Mark" appears in large ornate script at centre over a pale red large-numeral "50" underprint, with the issuing authority "Stadt- und Landkreis Aachen" across the top and a serial number at upper left. The lower field carries a three-line legal validity clause in small italic type, the issue date "Aachen, den 20. Juli 1923", two circular official seals flanking facsimile signatures of the Oberbürgermeister and the Vorsitzende des Kreisausschusses, and a red "MILLIONEN MARK" overprint.

Comments

Aachen's municipal and district authority issued this 50-million Mark note during the most acute phase of the 1923 hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank's capacity to supply currency was collapsing faster than local economies could function. Regional and municipal bodies across Germany stepped into the gap with Notgeld of their own — this is one of the higher denominations from that wave, reflecting just how rapidly the numbers had become meaningless by mid-to-late 1923.

Printed locally by Aachener Verlags- und Druckerei, the firm better known as a publishing house than a security printer. That detail alone says something about how little time there was for conventional procurement.
