The three administrative districts of Bonn-Stadt, Bonn-Land, and Siegkreis issued this note jointly during the acute phase of the 1923 hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank's supply of emergency currency could not keep pace with the velocity of price increases. Regional and municipal authorities across Germany were legally permitted — and effectively compelled — to issue their own notgeld to keep local commerce functioning. By the time denominations reached the fifty-million mark range, the notes were often obsolete within days of printing.
Rhenania-Druckerei, a Bonn commercial printer, handled production. The watermarked paper was a relatively conscientious security measure for what was, by mid-1923, essentially disposable currency.
