Montabaur's 50-million Mark notgeld dates from the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when municipal authorities across the Rhineland were printing emergency denominations that would have been unimaginable twelve months earlier. By October 1923 the Reichsmark had collapsed so completely that a 50-million note represented, at best, a few days' practical purchasing power before depreciation made it worthless again.
Small Rhenish towns like Montabaur typically contracted local printers for these late-stage issues, which is why production quality varies so sharply across surviving examples. Paper stock, ink saturation, and registration often differ noticeably even within the same denomination run.
