Pößneck is a small industrial town in Thuringia — leather goods, porcelain, textiles — with no particular claim to monetary history except that, like hundreds of German municipalities in the summer and autumn of 1923, it was forced to print its own emergency money simply to meet payroll. The Reichsbank could not supply banknotes fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation, and local authorities across Germany filled the gap with Notgeld denominated in figures that would have been unimaginable twelve months earlier.
C. G. Vogel was a local printing firm, not a security printer. The dry seal was the primary safeguard against counterfeiting — a modest defense for a note whose face value would be functionally worthless within weeks of issue.
