Maulburg is a small village in Baden, southwestern Germany, and its municipal administration had no business issuing currency — yet here it is. This note is a product of the hyperinflationary peak of late 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. Municipalities, savings banks, factories, and private firms across Germany stepped in with Notgeld to make local commerce possible at all.
The fifty billion Mark denomination signals this was issued in the final, most chaotic weeks before the Rentenmark stabilization of November 1923 effectively ended the crisis.
