The Bayerische Notenbank was one of four German state banks — alongside the Reichsbank and the banks of Baden and Saxony — that retained the right to issue notes under the 1875 Banking Act. During the hyperinflation of 1923, that right meant printing in denominations that would have been unimaginable two years earlier. This 50-billion-Mark note was issued in the final weeks before the Rentenmark stabilization of November 1923, by which point the official exchange rate had collapsed to over four trillion Marks to the dollar.

The Bayerische Notenbank's late-inflation issues were printed locally in Munich rather than contracted to Berlin-based firms, a logistical choice driven by the sheer velocity of new denominations required.
