Erbach is a small district capital in the Odenwald, and this note is one of hundreds of emergency issues — Notgeld — churned out by German municipalities during the hyperinflationary collapse of late 1923, when the Reichsbank's own currency was losing value faster than it could be printed. By the time fifty-billion-mark denominations were necessary for daily transactions, the Rentenmark stabilization was only weeks away. Most of this local paper was redeemed almost immediately and destroyed.
The single signature, v. Werner, is that of the district administrator authorizing issue — a bureaucratic act that by November 1923 had become almost ceremonially absurd.
