Nürnberg's city treasury was among dozens of municipal authorities forced into emergency currency production during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not keep pace with denominations. By the time notes in this range were being issued — fifty billion marks — the purchasing power had collapsed so thoroughly that the figure was almost arithmetically meaningless within days of printing.
E. Nister was a well-established Nürnberg printing house with a background in illustrated books and chromolithography, which occasionally shows in the production quality of local Notgeld compared to more austere municipal issues. Dr. Hermann Luppe served as Nürnberg's Oberbürgermeister from 1920 to 1933 — his signature appearing on emergency currency of this denomination places it firmly in the October 1923 peak.
