The 1958 Polish próba series emerged from a period of intense monetary reform under the PZPR government, when the National Bank was testing multiple alloy compositions simultaneously before committing to production runs. Aluminium trials like this one were explored partly for cost, partly because nickel imports were politically complicated under the Soviet-aligned trade bloc. Most próba strikes of this era saw fewer than a dozen examples produced for committee review.
The Waryński freighter design commemorates the vessel named for Ludwik Waryński, founder of the first Polish Marxist party — a choice that carried obvious ideological freight in 1958.
