Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, flanked on either side by two Chinese seal-script characters reading right to left: 銖 (Zhu) to the right of the hole and 五 (Wu) to the left. The characters are rendered in a relatively light, open style characteristic of the Wen Light type, cast in low relief against a plain field. The coin is encircled by a broad, slightly raised outer rim. The overall patina is a deep green verdigris consistent with long burial, with areas of earthen encrustation.
