Obverse description Facing bust of President Mobutu Sese Seko, depicted in a suit and wearing his characteristic heavy-rimmed glasses, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The legend BANQUE DU ZAIRE arcs around the upper field, divided by the portrait with BANQUE to the left and DU ZAIRE to the right. The portrait is centered in the field against a smooth, mirror-like proof background, giving the coin a strong cameo contrast. The overall style reflects the political portraiture common to African state coinage of the 1970s.
