The Forbidden City's 600th anniversary in 2020 fell during an unusually fraught year — the compound was closed to visitors for months due to the COVID-19 outbreak, making the commemorative release a peculiar exercise in celebrating a place the public temporarily could not enter. Construction of the palace complex was completed in 1420 under the Yongle Emperor, who controversially moved the Ming capital from Nanjing to Beijing largely to consolidate his own political position after seizing the throne from his nephew.
