Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed portrait of Su Shi (Su Dongpo), the celebrated Northern Song dynasty poet and statesman, depicted in flowing traditional robes seated upon rocks beside turbulent waves, holding an open scroll and gazing contemplatively into the distance. A seabird soars to the right of the figure, evoking the literary atmosphere of his famous Red Cliff prose poems. An excerpt from his poetry rendered in cursive Chinese calligraphy fills the upper left field. The denomination 5元 appears to the left in large numerals and characters, while the inscription 苏轼 (Su Shi) and the life dates 公元1037-1101年 are engraved along the lower exergue.
