Reverse description The central field depicts Zhang Heng's seismoscope (候风地动仪), the world's first known seismic detection instrument, dating to the Han Dynasty (AD 132), shown in detailed relief with its characteristic urn-like bronze vessel form surrounded by eight dragon heads and corresponding toad figures at its base. To the left, a group of three robed Han Dynasty scholars is depicted in attendance. An inscription in Chinese characters identifying the instrument and its date appears in the upper left field. The denomination 5 元 is inscribed in the lower field.
