Mount Tai has been a site of imperial ritual since at least the Zhou dynasty, with emperors performing the feng and shan sacrifices there to legitimize their rule — a tradition that continued through the Qing. The 2019 issue is part of China's ongoing landscape commemorative series for the 5 yuan brass denomination, which the People's Bank began expanding significantly in the 2010s as circulating commemoratives rather than collector-only releases, meaning genuine circulation examples do exist.
