| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a scholarly teaching scene rendered in high relief against a mirror-like proof field. At centre-right, the philosopher Mencius is shown seated before a low writing table, brush in hand, engaged in study or composition. To the upper left, three robed disciples are seated in attentive posture on a mat, conversing among themselves. In the lower left foreground, a single kneeling figure faces the master in a gesture of respectful address. The upper field carries a Chinese inscription recording Mencius's name and life dates. The denomination '5元' appears in the lower field. |
