The "Harmony" inscription series was introduced as part of a broader push by the People's Bank of China to modernize the brass yuan coinage while embedding cultural messaging aligned with the Hu-era political concept of a "harmonious society" — a slogan that had saturated domestic policy since the mid-2000s. By 2014, that political moment had already passed; Xi Jinping had consolidated power and the harmonious society framework was being quietly retired in favor of the "Chinese Dream." The coin arrived just as its own ideological premise was going out of fashion.
