| Reverse description | Central motif depicts Guan Hanqing, the celebrated Yuan-dynasty playwright and poet of the 13th century, rendered in fine relief as a bearded elder seated at a writing desk, brush in hand, in traditional robes. Behind him, two open scrolls or theatrical backdrops flank the composition, with architectural scenes of a classical Chinese building to the left and a theatrical scene to the right, accompanied by vertical Chinese inscriptions on each side panel. The upper arc bears the legend 关汉卿 公元13世纪 (Guan Hanqing, 13th century AD) in Chinese characters. The denomination 5元 appears in the lower left field in bold relief. |
