Obverse description Central field depicts a finely engraved view of a section of the Great Wall of China, rendered in high relief with a prominent watchtower rising above the battlemented parapet, the wall sweeping diagonally across rocky mountainous terrain flanked by pine trees in the lower field. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper border in Chinese characters. The date 1997 appears in Arabic numerals at the bottom of the field, separated from the central design by a raised inner rim.

Reverse description Central field presents a detailed architectural rendering of the Baohe Dian (Hall of Preserving Harmony), one of the three principal ceremonial halls of the Forbidden City in Beijing, depicted in three-quarter perspective with its characteristic double-eaved hip roof and ornate timber facade. Elaborate marble balustrades and terraced platforms occupy the foreground, with a secondary pavilion visible to the right. An arc of Chinese inscription along the upper border reads 北京故宫保和殿 始建于公元1420年 (Baohe Hall of the Beijing Forbidden City, first built in 1420 AD). The denomination 5元 appears in Arabic numerals and Chinese characters at the base of the field.
